Book Review: Shovel Ready by Adam Sternbergh

Friday, October 31, 2014

Shovel Ready was a surprisingly great book. I wasn't sure how I was going to like it when I first started it. Sternbergh's writing style is very unique and takes some getting used to. He doesn't use quotations so it was a little confusing at times to figure out who was talking.

Overall, I really enjoyed it! This is book is very dark and violent, and the main character is an anti-hero, however, everything fit together perfectly! The story was gripping and kept me turning the page until the end. I will definely be picking up the sequel next year. I recommend this to people who like futuristic, dark, hard-boiled stories. If you like Watchmen, Inception, or Noir Films, or if you are looking for something way out of your comfort zone, this is for you!

I was sent this book for by Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review.

My Sunday Routine

Sunday, October 12, 2014

I love Sundays! I always try to relax and mentally prepare myself for the upcoming week. I do have a routine that I do every Sunday. I find I feel a lot less anxious on Monday and am ready to handle whatever comes!

I always organize my agenda on Sunday. I look at my syllabus and write down everything that needs to get done. This really helps so that I won't have any surprises in the upcoming week. Sometimes my classes change times or days, and writing a new schedule every week is critical to lessening stress.

The rest of my routine is just to relax. I love green tea with jasmine and drinking it while reading a good book is extra calming. (Not That Kind of Girl is my current read and its so good!)

I also like to treat myself with a mask and painting my nails! This mask is my favorite! And of course Essie nail polishes are a must!

The Underground Girls of Kabul

Thursday, October 9, 2014

Before I received this book I knew that women in Afghanistan had far less rights than women in America. I did not however know the severity of these women's lives. This book was definitely eye-opening and showed me how lucky I am. I was heart broken to read these stories but happy for those women who have overcome so much. If you like learning about other cultures, this is definitely a must read. Though some points dragged a bit, Nordburg was very thorough in her research and I truly learned so much about the hardships of women in Afghanistan. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy nonfiction.
